Gone are the days when we feared witches and ghosts arriving at our doors on Halloween, or a trick being played on us! These days scariest thing about Halloween is the amount of waste from Halloween costumes and decorations. Halloween is a plastic magnet, Halloween decorations are often made of plastic and the polyester commonly used to make Halloween costumes is made from oil and is a form of microplastic.
What Halloween Costumes and Decorations are Trending This Year?
It’s not all about dressing up this year, it’s all about #UpCyclingHalloweenCostumes, #VintageHalloweenCostumes #CottonHalloweenCostumes #PaperHalloweenDecorations. The wave of anti-plastic campaigns have hit us hard and we’re all considering how we can have a sustainable Halloween aren’t we?
Sustainable Halloween Costume Ideas
Here are some sustainable Halloween costume ideas that are less terrifying for the environment and guaranteed to get a tasteful nod from the green police.
Think out of the box when it comes to Halloween costumes! Instead of thinking along the lines of what Halloween costume can I buy? Think along the lines of what clothes can I accessorise to turn into a Halloween costume? If you really must buy some new clothes then think along the lines of black jeans, dark coloured or orange boiler suits, t-shirts with motifs which at any other time of year wouldn’t be considered as Halloweeny. For example, spider man t shirts for kids can be worn all year round but worn on Halloween with some face paint and a bit of hair gel to create spikey hair and they will look the part! Why not get a real broom instead of a plastic broom? Make a cats tail out of black wool pom poms! Much better for the environment and your wallet.
Marks and Spencer have the most adorable cotton Halloween body suit for babies. Young British Designers have the most incredible orange boiler suits which you’ll wear for years to come! La Redoute have great Batman, Skull t shirts and black jeans for kids.
If you really want to go to town this Halloween and aren’t quite ready to get creative then go the full hog and cut some corners by buying your outfit from the experts in Halloween and everything dressing up related, Angels Fancy Dress. They have some incredible offers on Halloween costumes. But remember, if you buy plastic then re-use, re-use, re-use, it's what it's been made for!

There are several places close to the Arctic Circle where it is possible to travel and see the Aurora Lights, but my top Northern Lights Holidays destination has to be Iceland >>>
