Top 5 Quick Summer Makeup Tips

Top 5 Quick Summer Makeup Tips

Published August 6, 2021

Garden parties, late night soirees, and those long awaited holidays. Secure your summer makeup whatever you’re doing with these 5 simple steps!

1. Cleanse

Your skin has to cope with much more sweat and SPF build up in the summer so it’s important that you cleanse your face thoroughly to give your skin the best canvas before applying makeup.

My go to cleansers:

2. Moisturise

This step is key for me in the summer to keep the moisture locked in, it promotes glowing skin and makes for a great lazy base to your makeup. Top tip: Apply moisturiser on slightly damp skin after cleansing.

  • Neutrogena Hydro Boost available at LookFantasic and Boots
  • Kiehl’s Serum-Infused Water Cream available at LookFantasic
  • Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Replenishing HydraGel Complex available at LookFantasic

3. SPF

If you haven’t already read my blog on SPF, I recommend to check it out. You must wear SPF in the summer. You should be wearing this in winter too but as you can imagine in the summer it is even more important to prevent signs of ageing. SPF also is the key ingredient to glowing, hydrated skin–yes, even more so than moisturiser. If I had to pick only one skincare to use before my summer makeup, SPF would win hands down (plus it too can double up as a primer).

The top SPFs on the market at the moment:

  • EXPERT SUN PROTECTOR Face Cream available from Shiseido
  • Clarins Sun Care Dry Touch Cream for Face SPF50 available at AllBeauty
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Invisible Fluid Sun Cream SPF50 available at LookFantastic and Boots

4. BB cream/ Powder Foundation

In summer the last thing you want to be doing is caking on a full face of foundation, so BB or CC creams and good quality powder foundations are the perfect alternative. They allow the skin to breathe and if you can find one with SPF included that is a huge bonus (note: you should still apply SPF separately even if the products have SPF added).

IT cosmetics CC cream, available at LookFantastic has such excellent coverage you will not believe its not foundation, but it is light enough that it's the perfect product for summer, plus it has SPF in the formula!

Shiseido’s UV Protective Compact Foundation range offers high quality, buildable, coverage that feels light on your skin, prevents oiliness AND protects your skin from sun damage!

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser SPF30 is a fan favourite when talking Tinted Moisturiser. It’s affordable, light to medium coverage and leaves a dewy finish. Available at Boots

5. Less is more!

This is a key rule to remember in summer, there is nothing worse than sweating off layers of makeup, it collecting up in places you’d rather it didn't and then ending up looking cakey. So keep everything light. I don’t even bother with eyeshadow in the summer. I just take the blush and bronzer that I use on my face and brush it over my eyelids for a light bit of colour. Using BB creams, and light powders for blush and contour will do wonders!
